After all of the hype, all of the rumors and all of the epic fanboy flame wars the iPad has arrived. The verdict? Meh.

I’m not an Apple person by any stretch but I must say I was intrigued by the iPad when it was unveiled but after having a bit of time to contemplate the latest and greatest out of Cupertino I’ll probably wait for a second gen iPad to come along that may “fix” some of the deficiencies in the first gen product.

The Good:
  • Nice looking screen
  • Appears to be pretty fast
  • ePub eBook format support
  • $499 entry price
The Bad:
  • Unfortunate name.
  • No Flash support. We all know Flash is a beast but HTML 5 is a long way out and I’m not ready to give up so many sites that use Flash.
  • No USB or SD card support without buying a $30 dollar dongle. Boo! Don’t nickel and dime me Steve.
  • No sideloading of apps. I’m sure the iPad will be jailbroken inside of a week but I’d rather not have to.
The Meh:
  • iPhone OS. For a device of this size and power the iPhone OS should be just fine. The downside is the App Store (see sideloading above).
  • The iBookstore. Supporting the ePub format is huge but charging $3-$5 more per title than Sony & Amazon – not so much.
  • Keyboard/Dock. The ability to dock the iPad in either portrait or landscape mode would be nice.
  • No webcam. I’m not a big cam user but facial recognition and Skype video chat might be nice.
We’ll see what further tweaks come along in the near future with Apple’s regular OS updates but for now I think I’m going to sit tight.
